Overview
Managing duplicate customer records is crucial for maintaining accurate sales and engagement data. Shopify allows for the merging of customer records, but with limitations that Winehub users should be aware of - especially when dealing with active subscriptions such as Wine Clubs.
Merging Regular Customer Records
If you discover multiple customer profiles referring to the same individual, Shopify allows you to merge them into a single unified record. You’ll be prompted to select which profile’s details - such as addresses - should be retained. The customer ID that remains after merging will correspond to the chosen address.
For detailed steps, please refer to Shopify’s official documentation: Merging Customer Profiles in Shopify

Merging Customers with an Active Subscription
Shopify does not permit the merging of customer profiles where one profile has an active subscription (e.g. a Wine Club in Winehub).
However, you can still correct the customer’s total spend and maintain accurate records within Winehub by manually reassigning historical orders to the desired customer profile. Here’s how:
-
Open each historical order in Shopify.
-
In the Customer section, click the three dots.
-
Select Remove Customer.
-
Add the new or correct customer profile.
Example
A customer has entered a new email address creating a new customer record in Shopify, but their subscription and order history are attached to an old email address. Merging is not permitted because an active subscription is in place. Reassign any orders attached to the new email address to the old email address using the method above. Then delete the new customer record with the new email address. Open the old customer record and simply update the email address to the new one.
This method ensures the consolidated spend and engagement data aligns with your loyalty tiers, segmentation, and analytics within Winehub.
